A Covenant with Gravity | MFA Thesis Show | July 6-9, 2026

selections from A Covenant with Gravity | 2025 - 2026 | watercolor & gouache on paper

A Covenant with Gravity assembles a body of work that considers the relationships between bodies, both human and non-human, and the forces that shape them. Across these paintings, botanical forms, marine organisms, and human-made articles appear in states of suspension, accumulation, and transformation. Familiar boundaries between the natural and the fabricated become uncertain as forms merge, fragment, and reconfigure.

The exhibition takes its title from the notion of gravity not only as a physical force but as a psychological condition of existence. Gravity anchors, gathers, and pulls. It binds to place while affecting processes of erosion, collapse, growth, and change. The works presented here reflect on these tensions, tracing moments where attachment and release, presence and absence, permanence and impermanence coexist.

The artworks in this show were created on the small island of Efate in the South Pacific. The current heft of these works belies their humble journeys as tightly rolled bundles packed into overhead compartments on trans-Pacific flights. From LAX to Efate Island, blank Arches paper. On the return journey, Efate Island to LAX, a treasured culmination of eight months’ studio work. Taken in total, they are a story of loss and longing, of hope and healing, and the threads that bind us across time and space
